Summary
The Women of Brewster Place won the National Book Award, which started Gloria Neller’s brilliant career, and is now prefaced by Tayari Jones.
In her first widely acclaimed novel, Gloria Naylor weaves together the stories of seven women living in Brewster Place, which is a desolate refuge in the city and creates a powerful and moving picture of the strength, struggle and hope of African American women.
Fragile and tenacious, honest and open-minded, these women forged their lives in a place that in turn threatened and protected them – a common prison and a common home. In this moving and unforgettable book, Naylor deduces the human experience full of love and pain with simple eloquence and unusual intuition.
